On Monday, 17 September 2024, the College of the Mayor and Aldermen of the City of Luxembourg welcomed General François Lecointre, Grand Chancellor of the Legion of Honor, to City Hall.

After a brief meeting with Mayor Lydie Polfer, General François Lecointre addressed the Luxembourg Section of the Société des membres de la Légion d'honneur ASBL at its extraordinary general meeting, which was held at City Hall. The AGM was followed by a reception hosted by the City.

Alongside Liège, Belgrade, Volgograd, Algiers and Brazzaville, the City of Luxembourg is one of the only non-French local authorities to have been awarded the Legion of Honor cross. It was awarded in 1957 by French President René Coty to honour the city's loyal friendship with France, the sacrifice of its many volunteers who joined the Allied armies during the First World War, and its admirable spirit of resistance and commitment to freedom during the Second World War.
