General information
On Thursday, 26 September 2024, all parts of the city will remain accessible, but the Ville Haute and Gare districts will be heavily affected.
Due to the popemobile procession and other events during the official visit of His Holiness Pope Francis, parking and traffic restrictions will be unavoidable from late in the afternoon of Wednesday, 25 September on some streets in the Ville Haute and Gare districts.
The City recommends, therefore, that wherever possible, you use the tram and other public transport services to travel to and within the capital. Please also allow extra travel time for potential disruptions. The tram will operate all day except between 12:00 and 14:00.
Road closures and no-parking zones
On the eve and the day of the Pope's visit, the major boulevards located in the city centre – Boulevard Royal, Avenue Marie-Thérèse and Boulevard F.D. Roosevelt – will be closed to private traffic, except for pedestrians. This also applies to the Gare district, where prohibitions will be in force notably on the Bourbon Plateau. In addition, there will be changes to parking in public spaces. These changes apply mainly to the same major thoroughfares where there will be changes to traffic flow. They will be put in place by City of Luxembourg staff as needed and in chronological order, as detailed in the map below.
The Service Circulation (Traffic Department) will ensure proper signage is provided on all affected routes.
The City recommends that residents and workers in the affected areas check all information ahead of time and plan around the restrictions.
Deliveries in the city centre and Gare district
On Thursday, 26 September, deliveries in the areas affected by the Pope's visit will be moved forward to the time slot between 5:00 and 9:00. For information on how to enter and leave the Ville Haute pedestrian zone, see map below. No deliveries can be made after this time.
Deliveries to the Gare district can be made as of 20:00 on Wednesday, 25 September, via Route d'Esch and Rue de Hollerich.
Cycling routes
Some cycle paths in the city centre and Gare district will be closed during the Pope's visit. We recommend that cyclists plan their trips in advance using other available cycle routes.
