Truman Capote on Screen

American writer Truman Capote was born on September 30, 1924. In the 100 years since his birth, he has become as legendary for his writing as for his extravagant ways and ‘bons mots’, as if he were the twentieth-century answer to Oscar Wilde. Though famous for his razor-sharp wit, his writing has a cinematic quality to it as well, so it’s no wonder that not only some of his works were adapted for the cinema but he was himself invited to write for the screen.

How widely his talent was appreciated is obvious from the list of very diverse directors who have filmed his work: Blake Edwards (Breakfast at Tiffany’s) was known for his fizzy studio classicism, while the direction of John Huston (Beat the Devil) was more robust and, in this case, darkly funny. Vittorio De Sica brought his Italian Neorealism roots to his English-language debut, the romantic melodrama Indiscretion of an American Wife with Montgomery Clift, while the headstrong Richard Brooks brought In Cold Blood, Capote’s most discussed and innovative literary work, to the big screen in documentary-like black-and-white.

You can do films for the fun of it, or the thrill of it, but certain films you can’t do unless there’s something driving you, something you have a passion for that will pull you through.
