Jim Jarmusch: The Way of the Wanderer
Jim Jarmusch’s Night on Earth (1991) takes the viewer on five night-time taxi rides in cities around the world. Some are hilarious, others tragic, most a wry combination of both. Jarmusch’s fifth feature really encapsulates his filmmaking philosophy in a nutshell. He’s interested not in the destination but what happens on the way there. Each taxi ride is something we wouldn’t usually see in a film, where they cut from a character getting into a cab to them at their destination. Jarmusch, and by extension his cinema, is more interested in the in-between moments between leaving and getting there.
Who are we when we think that we are between supposedly very important moments in our lives? Aren’t we, without filters or expectations or pretensions, more the real us than during the moments we think that matter? Aren’t those moments the most genuine, the most amusing and heartbreaking? Jarmusch makes a good case for the idea that real life happens between life’s major events.
