Cinémathèque Film Club

What’s almost as good – and sometimes better – than watching a film? Talking about it, of course. Cinémathèque Film Club screens a print from our archives chosen by a special guest, who will discuss their pick with the audience after the screening.

Festen Danemark 1998 | Thomas Vinterberg | vostFR+EN | 105’ | 35mm | Cast : Ulrich Thomsen, Thomas Bo Larsen, Paprika Steen, Trine Dyrholm, Henning Moritzen

When a Danish paterfamilias turns 60, his large family gathers at a castle to celebrate him. Everybody likes and respects him deeply – or do they?

« Though it dedicates itself to avoiding directorial egotism, in accordance with strict rules of the Danish filmmakers’ collective known as Dogma 95, Thomas Vinterberg’s Celebration is still a virtuoso feat. » (The New York Times)

Film followed by a conversation with Cinémathèque Film Club guest Gintare Parulyte and the audience | in English | about 45’

Gintare Parulyte is a Lithuanian-born actress, filmmaker and playwright from Luxembourg.

This cinematic gem is so close to its characters that one gets this guilty sensation of not only seeing their thoughts but also their sins. A masterpiece that redefined how brutal honesty and toxic family dynamics can be portrayed on the big screen, it is also one of a handful of movies that made me want to become a filmmaker.
