Le grand maître du muet tout en musique

Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau, the great master of German Expressionism. This April and May, the Cinémathèque presents a retrospective dedicated to one of the most important directors of the silent film era. Murnau’s unparalleled use of shadows and light, his striking imagery and revolutionary camera work shaped the language of film for generations to come.

The retrospective hightlights some of Murnau’s finest cinematic achievements, from the haunting Nosferatu to the poetic Sunrise, alongside lesser-known gems like City Girl and Tabu: A Story of the South Seas. All regular screenings are accompanied live on the piano by Cinémathèque habitués Hughes Maréchal or Pierre Boespflug. The film cycle’s centerpieces are two ciné-concerts : Der letzte Mann will screen with Luxembourg’s Francesco Tristano on the keys and Pascal Schumacher on percussion, while Mexican-born electronics artist Murcof will accompany Faust – eine deutsche Volkssage.
