How it works

A community garden (unlike an allotment garden or municipal garden) is a garden created, cultivated and managed by a group of residents according to exclusively ecological criteria – i.e. no pesticides, chemical fertilisers or genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

This type of garden is reserved for residents of the neighbourhood in which the community garden is located. This allows gardeners to get there without a car and makes the garden into a neighbourhood meeting place.

Throughout the year, Luxembourg City offers gardeners training sessions on ecological gardening (conducted by an external trainer) and the group of gardeners is supervised during the first year by a specialist hired by the City of Luxembourg.

The first garden (pilot project) was launched in May 2013 in Bonnevoie-Kaltreis. The Limpertsberg and Gare/Ville Haute gardens opened in May 2014, a fourth garden was opened in May 2017 in Pfaffenthal, and a fifth was opened in the Grund in May 2018.
