In line with the City's efforts to calm traffic and make cycling routes safer, new infrastructure was rolled out on Wednesday, 28 August 2024 as part of a pilot project in Rue Kohlenberg.

As Rue Kohlenberg is a purely residential street with a 30 km/h speed limit and relatively light traffic (200 vehicles per hour during peak hours), it is entirely feasible for cyclists and motorised vehicles to share the road in compliance with current government recommendations. Accordingly, the bicycle lane – which had previously been delineated by red paving stones on the pavement – has been removed and replaced by infrastructure that allows bikes and motorised vehicles to share the road, while at the same time reducing the speed of vehicular traffic. Reorganising traffic flow in this way allows for better use of the road area, and makes the road safer and more comfortable for all users.

The City's Service Circulation (Traffic Department) has installed six, evenly spaced, road-narrowing "pinch points" along the entire length of Rue Kohlenberg. These "pinch points" require vehicular traffic to give way to vehicles coming from the other direction, while enabling cyclists to ride safely without encountering any obstacles. After a test phase, the pilot project will be assessed, and the College of Aldermen will decide whether to implement it with permanent structures.

The pilot project was presented to the residents of Cessange beforehand, during discussions held by the College of Aldermen as part of the Apéri'tour on 9 July.
