> Palme d’Or, Festival de Cannes
Young lovers Orfeu and Eurydice run through the favelas of Rio during Carnival, on the lam from a hitman dressed like Death and Orfeu's vengeful fiancée. Passing between moments of fantasy and stark reality, the revelries of Carnival become a metaphor for the supernatural of the Underworld.
« A film that for ecstasy or feeling, and blaze of colour has not been matched. » (Sydney Morning Herald)
« It is amazingly exciting -- sometimes, with the quick voluptuous beat of the music, and the mad gusto of the costumed dancers, the pace seems unbearable in its speed and passion. There is realism and imagery; fantasy and truth. » (Sydney Morning Herald)
