The tram service to the airport, which is schedule to start operating on Sunday, 2 March 2025, will mark an important milestone, i.e. the completion of the 16-kilometre long section of the line 1 service between Stade de Luxembourg and Luxembourg Airport, which serves 24 stations, including 10 hubs.
As scheduled, the first extension of the line 1 service will involve the building of a new section extending the service to Kirchberg (K2A), with trams departing from the Pfaffenthal/Kirchberg hub and running along Boulevard Konrad Adenauer before terminating at the European School.
The extension of the line 1 service along Boulevard Konrad Adenauer to Kirchberg includes sustainable redevelopment work with the aim of promoting active mobility. The work will include vegetating the platform and creating two rows of trees, which will increase the amount of green space by 50% and the number of trees to 400. Service on this new extension, between Pont Grande-Duchesse Charlotte and the European School, is scheduled to begin operating at the end of the 2027 summer break.
Preparatory work is scheduled to start in the week beginning on 17 February 2025, and will involve trimming 92 trees, transplanting 49 others, and setting up work-site facilities. Luxtram will also reroute and upgrade underground utility networks to ensure that they can continue to be accessed without disrupting the tram service.
