Motorists, cyclists and pedestrians
- Obey traffic lights.
- Let others know what you're doing.
- Look for eye contact.
- Be attentive and vigilant to what is going on around you.
- Adjust your speed.
Motorists and cyclists
- Obey stop signs and rights-of-way.
- Watch out for doors opening on parked vehicles.
- Be alert to blind spots.
- Signal any changes in direction (turn signals for motorists and arm signals for cyclists).
Cyclists and pedestrians
- Be visible and make sure you can be seen.
- Do not use pedestrian areas as bicycle lanes.
- At pedestrian and cyclist crossings, both have the same rights and responsibilities.
Your safety always comes first!
Particularly at night and in bad weather, make yourself as visible as possible by using:
- reflective clothing and vests, and
- additional gadgets such as bracelets, stickers, reflective bag covers or LED lights.
Motorists
- Always keep a safe distance, even when overtaking.
- Respect cycling infrastructure, such as advanced stop lines.
- Give way to pedestrians and cyclists before turning right.
- Do not block pedestrian crossings and respect no-parking areas.
- Give cyclists room to get to their advanced stop lines at traffic lights.
- Do not honk your horn unnecessarily.
Cyclists
- Respect pedestrian traffic and spaces reserved for pedestrians.
- Do not pass vehicles on the right.
- Ride single file in built-up areas.
- Cycle against the flow of traffic only where allowed, and only use bus lanes which are open to cyclists.
Your safety always comes first!
Particularly at night and in bad weather, make sure you have bicycle lights that comply with the traffic code: a front light of at least 3 watts, a red rear light, two reflectors per pedal, one reflector per wheel and one red rear reflector.
Pedestrians
- Take marked and safe routes.
- Be sure to cross the road at pedestrian crossings.
- Try to make eye contact with motorists if the pedestrian crossing is not regulated by a traffic signal
- Be aware of the speed and distance of approaching vehicles.
- Keep a safe distance between you and the edge of the road at all times.
- Pay attention to cyclists in shared-use areas such as pedestrian zones and shared-use paths (e.g. municipal parks).
