Beer or wine? What broken glass reveals about earlier times

The Arts and Crafts and Folk Art Department (ADP) has set itself the task of valorising the preserved elements of the historic aristocratic and town houses in which its permanent exhibition is displayed. Visitors can therefore learn a great deal about the former inhabitants while strolling through this part of the National Museum and learn to read the architectural relics. To this end, findings from archive research and excavation finds are incorporated into the tour. Particularly rare finds, which were unearthed from a latrine in the former inner courtyard, are the fragments of glass from the 15th to 17th centuries. They were painstakingly pieced together and then professionally restored. Simple glasses and rare luxury objects have thus become recognisable again, tell of the drinking habits of earlier times and, above all, bear witness to the wealth of some of the residents of the houses in Wiltheimstraße.
