Two heterosexual, married chimney sweeps find themselves in situations that challenge their vision of sexuality. One of them has a sexual relationship with another man, without perceiving it as an expression of homosexual desire or as an infidelity to his wife. The other starts having night-time dreams in which he sees himself as a woman. He begins to wonder to what extent the gaze of others has shaped his personality, and whether there are aspects of himself that he has repressed.
Remarkable for the accuracy of its dialogue and the banality of its situations, Sex offers an unusual structure, with sequences of equal length, devoted in its entirety to the study of the characters' psyches. The first of a trilogy, the film promises a sharp look at Norwegian mores and the established heteronormativity.
