On Friday, 8 November 2024, the "Kind of Blue" photo exhibition was officially opened in the tunnel leading to the elevator connecting the Grund to Ville-Haute, with members of the City of Luxembourg's College of the Mayor and Aldermen in attendance.
The "Kind of Blue" exhibition is the product of the EMoSEE workshops run by psycho-socio-educational professionals under the guidance of artist Cristina Nuñez, involving around 80 young people aged 15 to 26 from various schools in Luxembourg.
"Kind of Blue" features a selection of autobiographical photographs taken by the young people under an artistic and curatorial direction that aimed to encourage personal expression through artistic creation. The EMoSEE workshops focus on transforming emotions into photographs and working with the multiple and changing perceptions of emotions on the human face. They offer a safe space to express and accept emotional states considered undesirable, especially in the age of social media and social norms of self-representation. The images captured by the workshop participants invite viewers to engage in a face-to-face encounter with the authentic, emotional expressions of young people. They thereby act as a mirror, encouraging those passing through the Grund tunnel to reflect on their own emotions, transforming the exhibition into an interface for cultural and social sharing and interaction. Photographs taken during the EMoSEE workshops are also on display at the neimënster chapel and as part of a virtual exhibition on the Art as Experience website (www.artasexperience.org). They can also be seen on the travelling interactive cube which is visiting various secondary schools to promote this practice and raise awareness among young people of the importance of accepting authentic images of themselves.
The EMoSEE project was commissioned by the Centre de psycho-social et d'accompagnement scolaire (CePAS) and supported by the Ministry of Education, Children and Youth (Ministère de l'Éducation nationale, de l'Enfance et de la Jeunesse), the Ministry of Culture (Ministère de la Culture), the City of Luxembourg, the Oeuvre nationale de secours Grande-Duchesse Charlotte and the Fondation Sommer, while Art as Experience ASBL led the artistic and participatory aspects of the project.
The exhibition is organised by the Centre d'animation pédagogique et de loisirs (Creative Learning Centre – CAPEL) of the Service Foyers scolaires (Childcare Department), and runs until January in the Grund tunnel. Admission is free.
