Screening of the film "La promesse verte"

The City is inviting the public to attend a screening of the French film "La promesse verte" (The Green Promise) by director Edouard Bergeon. The film will be screened on Tuesday, 19 November 2024, at the City of Luxembourg Cinémathèque (17, place du Théâtre).

The methods used by agro-industrial groups in Indonesia

Taking a resolutely pro-environment stance, the film exposes the methods used by the agro-industrial groups that are thriving off palm oil production in Indonesia. Although palm oil is a widely used ingredient in many everyday consumer products, its production has led to the deforestation of millions of hectares of tropical rainforest in Indonesia, and with it substantial losses of many endangered animal species' natural habitats, not to mention the human and social tragedy that it has caused for indigenous peoples.

The screening of the feature-length film will be followed by a discussion moderated jointly by Jean-Louis Zeien, President of the NGO Fairtrade Lëtzebuerg, and Nicole Isaac, Fair Trade Officer at the City of Luxembourg.

As a Fair Trade Municipality since 2011, the City actively seeks to promote fair trade, both within the municipal administration and throughout society as a whole. In opting to purchase fair-trade products, government authorities, businesses and end consumers alike can be sure that small-scale producers in the Global South will be earning fairer incomes and enjoying better working conditions. Plus, they will also be supporting environmentally friendly production methods. As such, as part of its efforts to contribute to a fairer world, the City prioritises fair-trade products when purchasing textile, food and other products, conducts fair-trade awareness and promotion campaigns, and acts in an advisory role in its discussions with event organisers.
