Description
Every five years, all persons registered to vote are called to elect six representatives from Luxembourg to the European Parliament. In Luxembourg, the European elections last took place on 9 June 2024. To vote, you must be at least 18 years of age. Voting is mandatory.
The European elections are open to all Luxembourgers (who are automatically registered to vote as soon as they meet the legal requirements) and to all European Union nationals residing in Luxembourg who have registered to vote in the European elections.
Applications to the Public Prosecutor to be excused
Voting is compulsory for everyone who is registered to vote.
Voters who are unable to vote must notify the Public Prosecutor with territorial jurisdiction for their place of residence, stating their reasons and providing the necessary supporting documents. If the Public Prosecutor considers that the reasons given are valid, no legal proceedings will be initiated against the voter.
The following are automatically exempted from voting:
- voters who, at the time of the election, reside in a municipality other than the one where they are called to vote;
- voters over 75 years of age;
- individuals sentenced for a criminal offence;
- persons disqualified from voting further to conviction for a criminal offence.

Even if you have not received your election notice, you can vote at your polling station by simply showing your ID.
