On Thursday, 16 January 2025, the City and UP_FOUNDATION officially launched the "MEGARE – Zesumme grouss ginn am Quartier Gare" programme, which aims to transform the Gare district into a vibrant and supportive place to live, with initiatives that centre on the positive development of children, and where cultural diversity is celebrated.
Through child-centered educational projects, the establishment and collaboration of a dynamic network of players, and the promotion of cultural diversity, "MEGARE" aims to foster the positive development of children, as well as increase their participation and visibility in neighborhood life, while strengthening social cohesion.
Two projects already in place
For the launch of this programme, two projects have already been already in place:
- Friendly Guides – An initiative developed by our city's young residents, where children newly arrived in Luxembourg are paired with a local friend-guide. These young guides are specially trained to welcome new arrivals and help them integrate into their new environment.
- Mini-Entdecker Club – Participatory tours of the Gare district where children can explore their surroundings and express themselves freely. Their views and perceptions are noted and taken into account in the development of future "MEGARE" projects.
Ambassadors for the Luxembourg City ultural melting pot
As one of the capital's most densely populated neighborhoods, Gare is home to some 11,400 residents – of which 82% hail from abroad – including 890 children under the age of 14. These children, who are the true ambassadors of Luxembourg City's cultural melting pot (which brings together around 120 different nationalities), are given the chance to become the driving force behind the development of community life. Belonging to a multitude of nationalities, ethnicities and religions, the children show through their interactions and friendships that diversity can be a strength, as well as a channel for solidarity and mutual respect.
