In 2006, the college of aldermen decided to create the position of environmental officer (délégué à l'environnement), who acts under its direct supervision. The duties of the environmental officer, as defined with the college of aldermen, are as follows:

Project management

The environmental officer assists the various municipal departments in their projects, providing follow-up for ecological matters, giving their technical opinion, organising the collaboration of external experts, and liaising with the government administrations.

Environmental management

The environmental officer assists with inventory, as well as with preparing action plans and strategies. They also oversee the establishment of an environmental management system, which ensures the City's activities are compatible with its set ecological objectives. This work includes drawing up an environmental report and an environmental action plan, which are updated annually.

  • verifies the actual impact of environmental activities, compliance with legislative restrictions, and the internal organisational framework at procedural and structural level;
  • identifies weaknesses;
  • proposes concrete actions and monitors their implementation.

Technological and regulatory oversight

The environmental officer gathers all relevant environmental documents (legislative and regulatory texts, specialised literature, etc.) and provides access to them for the personnel through the Emweltbibliothéik.

Providing information and raising awareness

In addition to the environmental initiatives of Luxembourg City, the environmental officer helps implement information and awareness campaigns, both among the personnel of the administration and among the general public.
