Overview
From theatre to opera to dance, lovers of the performing arts are spoilt for choice in Luxembourg City. In addition to two municipal theatres, the Théâtre national (National Theatre) and several private theatres, the city boasts a unique venue known as the Rotondes, which hosts a range of cultural events and participatory projects for all ages.
Luxembourg City's municipal theatres
The Grand Théâtre of the City of Luxembourg puts on an eclectic programme of opera, theatre and dance, featuring both national and international performers. Since 2017, the Grand Théâtre, together with the Philharmonie and MUDAM, has organised the Red Bridge Project – a multidisciplinary project dedicated to a different artist each year.
The Théâtre des Capucins, with its focus on the dramatic arts, puts on shows in four languages performed by groups from Luxembourg and abroad.
Rotondes
Rotondes is a unique venue set in two former train sheds at Luxembourg Central Station.
As a venue for cultural exploration, Rotondes offers a rich programme of events with particular focus on the performing arts, the visual arts and contemporary music, as well as a number of participatory projects and workshops for all ages. Leading the way in uncovering new talent in these art forms, Rotondes attaches great importance to young performers and audiences, and is seen as a centre of expertise and incubator for new cultural initiatives with an educational component.
In addition to promoting various art forms, Rotondes is also a conference centre and forum for dialogue on major issues in today's society – especially those relating to new economies and their social impact.
