Rétrospective

Wes Anderson

The Life Eccentric with Wes Anderson

It isn’t often that you can start a retrospective text by citing an Instagram account but we’ll make an exception for Wes Anderson. His minutely calculated sets, sense of colour and framing and his flair for the odd and eccentric are so identifiable that they inspired the ‘Accidentally Wes Anderson’ account, which offers photos of real-life place that look like they came out of an Anderson film.

Indeed, out of all the contemporary U.S. auteurs, Anderson’s visual signature is the most recognisable – even though his films take place anywhere from Mitteleuropa to New England and from a 1950s American desert town to a Japanese island in the near future inhabited solely by dogs.

These impeccably designed worlds also have another advantage as they help underline how out of place his misfit protagonists feel in a world that seems too perfect for them.Unintentionally, the ‘Accidentally Wes Anderson’ account also serves as a reminder that the director’s vision isn’t pure fantasy at all but something that’s all around us – you just need to know where and how to look.

As our retrospective unfolds, we extend our exploration to include two films where Wes Anderson played a pivotal role: The Squid and the Whale, produced by Anderson, and She’s Funny That Way, where he served as an executive producer. Although not directed by Anderson himself, these collaborations vividly reflect his unmistakable touch, evident in their visual storytelling and nuanced characterizations.

To conclude our retrospective, we are showcasing three additional movies: The Grand Budapest Hotel, The French Dispatch, and Isle of Dogs, further highlighting the breadth and depth of Anderson’s cinematic repertoire. Together, these films further confirm Anderson's unique world view and showcase his blend of whimsy and melancholy that continues to captivate audiences worldwide.

There’s no story if there isn’t some conflict. The memorable things are usually not how pulled together everybody is. I think everybody feels lonely and trapped sometimes. I would think it’s more or less the norm.
