Cats & Breakkies

Cats & Breakkies

About

Cats & Breakkies are four young Berliners with jazz in their hearts and techno in their genes. With a classical band line-up – e-guitar, bass, drums, keys – they rock an instrumental dj-live-set on stages, floors and festivals anytime. Always danceable to, with courage to elegiac melodies, opulent breaks and rich surfaces, they convince above all by a precise build-up of tension and tonal dimension in their arrangements. After their debut album organic electro, co-produced with David August, had been released in 2015, they were nominated for the “Bremer Jazzpreis 2016” in the category “Jazz & Electronics”, followed by multiple performances at festivals and clubs, eg. At the Kantine am Berghain, the Tallinn Music Week and the Fusion Festival. With spectral 2018 they stepped up their game yet again. In ten tracks, which consists of three individual short-sets, they weave artful tonal and metric layers, drill thick disco-boards, deliver perfect build up and drop dramaturgy – and above all in a relaxed way put on immense pressure. Cats & Breakkies, that is elegant, straightforward live-techno from Berlin.

Pol Belardi Quartet

About

It's no secret that the soundtracks of video games, played by Pol Belardi during his childhood have left an imprint on the musician's development. One of the first creative exercises of the gifted multi-instrumetalist was copying and rearranging the themes of his favorite classics such as Zelda, Secret of Mana or Final Fantasy. Moving back and forth between controller and keyboard, the influences of the 8 to 64 bit repertoire are undeniable. Always amazed by the creativity of the Japanese composers in his favorite games, Pol has embarked on a journey arranging selected themes for a group of talented musicians.

Léon Phal

About

Léon Phal, promising saxophonist, is part of a young generation of jazz musicians whose work has been inspired and influenced by the Standards. His work is inspired by these classics of jazz, and he pays tribute to every note in brio, whether it be Roy Hargrove’s RH factor or D’Angelo’s “Voodoo”. His mastery of the instrument, his great sense of melody and delicacy of his art, amplified by a devastating groove, forebode a bright future for the Franco-Swiss, native of Aÿ en Champagne.

This young artist is characterized by a freshness and a talent he displayed in festivals like Nancy Jazz Pulsations and Jazz à Vienne, where he won the 2019 prizes. Praised as a rising star by Jazz News and Jazz Magazine for the release of his first album “Canto Bello”, Léon Phal leads the brilliant quintet “Léon Phal quintet”, whose influences and bright imagination inspire remarkable improvisations. He is already up to par with the greats of the contemporary jazz scene, so there is no doubt that with his breath, curiosity and free spirit, he will go very far.

Produced by RéZZo Focal Jazz à Vienne and published on Kyudo Records, “Dust to Stars” is a marvelous example of what we love most about this new jazz scene: a free and dynamic interpretation of music, combined with solid references (acquired at the Conservatoire et Haute École de Musique de Lausanne). A jazz whose influences and colors touch everyone’s musical sensitivity, demystifying the access to the genre.

His second album, “Dust to Stars”, explores styles like house, afrobeat or dum’n’bass. A real dance machine with a soul. From these confrontations between acoustic and electronic, jazz fervor and dancefloor fever, dreamy escapes and meticulous beats, ensues a salutary symbiosis between contagious energy and, especially nowadays, rare elegance.

This record is the perfect continuation of “Canto Bello”. A more sophisticated production with the spontaneity and brilliance of improvised music. The sound’s group is electrified by Gauthier Toux’s keyboard, the horns and complicity of Léon Phaland Zacharie Kysk (trumpet), the rhythmic of Arthur Alard (drums) and Rémi Bouyssière (double bass).

After a first opus with Julien Lourau as artistic director, the group recorded this album in Lausanne at the Studio du Flon, under the guidance of sound engineer Benoît Corboz, who has accompanied Erik Truffaz for several years.

The creative process has evolved - with Léon Phal as producer and composer.

Léon Phal: head in the stars and "first giant steps".
