Duties
In terms of integration, the main goal of the Service Intégration et besoins spécifiques (Integration and Special Needs Department) is to carry out measures to promote the integration of citizens of different nationalities. In close collaboration with the Municipal Advisory Committee on Integration, associations working in the intercultural sector and the other Luxembourg City municipal departments, the Service Intégration et besoins spécifiques strives to identify needs arising from the mix of cultures living in Luxembourg City, and to develop a plan of action to best respond to these needs.
The gender equality officer takes part in their role as expert in meetings of the Municipal Advisory Committee on Integration.
As regards special needs, the department acts as a point of contact for people with disabilities, as well as for all organisations working in the disability sector. This work, carried out in close cooperation with the aforementioned organisations and other Luxembourg City municipal departments, helps to continuously improve the services available to residents with special needs. Since 2012, the participative committee has enabled the direct and effective involvement of people with disabilities in all projects. The department also organises interpreters for sessions of the municipal council, and also handles the translation of preparatory texts into German for sign-language interpreters.
The department's philosophy is to plan and carry out measures in direct consultation with the people affected by them.
