Hommage à Maggie Smith & Joan Plowright

Late last year we lost Dame Maggie Smith, followed earlier this year by Dame Joan Plowright. The duo were not just two of the best actors in British theatre and film but also friends in real life. Their delightful rapport is part of what makes the documentary Tea with the Dames, which unites them with fellow acting titans Judi Dench and Eileen Atkins for a gossipy tea session, such a delight. The pair also co-starred in Zeffirelli’s Tea with Mussolini, set in 1930s Italy, besides their own projects, such as Enchanted April (Plowright), also set in Italy, and The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (Smith), also set in the 1930s. This retrospective will allow audiences to (re)discover the actresses’ magnetic brilliance on the big screen, where these ladies could shine like true dames – or be characters who were hardly a dame at all.

An actor is somebody who communicates someone else's words and emotions to an audience. It's not me. It's what writers want me to be.
